I had left over fabric from my wedding dress laying around and decided to make a hair scrunchie out of it. A scrunchie was the perfect honeymoon accessory since we were traveling to three countries and had a few flights to catch.
Supplies:
- Tulle and lace – This fabric was left over from hemming my wedding dress
- A solid fabric for the scrunchie base – I used the extra lining fabric that was from my wedding dress
- Ruler
- Paper
- Pencil
- Pins
- Elastic
- Scissors
- Needle and Thread
- Safety Pin
Steps
- Create a rectangle pattern on the paper, measure a hair tie and double the amount for the length and make it 2 inches wide.
- Cut a rectangle from the solid fabric.
- Pin the rectangle along the long side folding it in half.
- Sew the rectangle at 1/2 inch seam allowance.
- Pin the safety pin to the end of the fabric and flip to the rectangle to the right side out.
- Cut the elastic to the length of a normal hair tie.
- Use the safety pin to thread the elastic through the rectangle. (Tip – pin one edge to the edge of the rectangle so you don’t lose it).
- Overlap the elastic and use a zig-zag stitch to secure it (I repeated the zig-zag stitch about 5 times to make sure it was secure).
- Hand sew the ends of the scrunchie together so the elastic is fully enclosed.
- Play around with the tulle to create a design that you love and hand sew it into place.
- Sew on the embellishments or lace on.
- I played around with the tulle three times to figure out what I wanted. I ended up using the last design!
